Every element of the Unit Plan points toward one crucial question: how will we know what students have actually learned? In the MYP, assessment is integral to teaching and learning — a pedagogical tool for supporting learning through ongoing feedback, not just a final ranking mechanism.

Effective formative evaluation and feedback are among the most powerful factors positively influencing student achievement. MYP assessment promotes deep understanding by supporting inquiries set in real-world contexts and demands critical and creative thinking rather than rote memorization.

The common misconception: "assessment equals testing"

Many teachers assume the summative must be a traditional, silent written exam — a punitive mechanism divorced from the learning process, happening only after "real teaching" is finished.

What happens if this is ignored?

Norm-referenced grading fosters competitive, high-anxiety environments; factual-only assessments fail to prepare students for the MYP eAssessments; and mechanically averaging grades penalizes early mistakes, producing an inaccurate final picture.

1. Criterion-related assessment

The MYP uses neither norm-referenced (comparing students to each other) nor strictly criterion-referenced models. Instead, "criterion-related" assessment uses pre-published, mandated criteria — four per subject group (A, B, C, D), each worth up to 8 achievement levels — shifting focus from "How do I beat my classmate?" to "How do I meet these expectations?"

2. Formative vs. summative processes

Formative (for learning): feedback that modifies daily teaching and learning; never used to calculate a final grade. Summative (of learning): internal, school-based assessment providing formal evidence of achievement against MYP criteria, planned from the very start of the unit.

3. Performances of understanding

Authentic tasks — a composition, research report, oral presentation, physical performance, or problem solution — let students demonstrate knowledge, skills, and attitudes in real contexts. Understanding is not a set of facts a student possesses; it's something they can do with those facts.

1. The "averaging" trap

The mistake: averaging a Level 2 (September), Level 4 (November), and Level 6 (March) into a final Level 4.

How to avoid: use professional judgment to award the level reflecting current capability, not the average of early struggles.

2. Secret assessment criteria

How to avoid: distribute task-specific rubrics on day one and use them during formative peer-review.

3. Assessing criteria that weren't taught

How to avoid: it is not valid to summatively assess work that doesn't address objectives explicitly taught during the unit.

Practical Classroom Examples

Mathematics. Instead of a 50-question abstract geometry test (Criterion D), students act as urban planners designing a community park within a budget, justifying decisions and discussing whether their mathematical model is valid for the real-world scenario.

Sciences. Instead of a multiple-choice quiz, students are presented with a real algae bloom problem (Criteria B and C) and must independently formulate a hypothesis, design a valid procedure, and evaluate environmental impact.

Individuals and Societies. Instead of a chronological essay, students curate a museum exhibition (Criteria C and D), writing OPVL placards and arranging artifacts to communicate a debatable perspective on the revolution's impact.
