If your unit plan is a map and daily learning experiences are the journey, the summative assessment is the final destination — the definitive moment answering what students truly understand and can do with it. The MYP demands authentic "performances of understanding," not traditional factual-recall tests.

Why This Matters

The educational purpose: assessing for transfer

Facts don't transfer — they're locked to a specific time and place. Knowledge transfers at the conceptual level. An assessment testing only factual recall fails to measure the core objective of the programme; authentic assessments force "synergistic thinking" in unfamiliar, real-world scenarios.

The common misconception: the "gotcha" test

Summative assessment is often treated as a secret, punitive measurement. In a criterion-related system this is counterproductive — assessment must be transparent and known in advance so students can regulate their own learning.

What happens if this is ignored?

Students learn only facts matter while the SOI is ignored; they reach Year 5 eAssessments (75% inquiry, communication, unfamiliar-context application) unprepared; and teachers cannot accurately evaluate the higher achievement bands, which require transfer.

1. Performances of understanding

Understanding is something a student can do, not just have. Examples: designing a sustainable architectural model, curating a museum exhibition, composing an original piece, or executing an independent lab investigation — all making student thinking visible.

2. Alignment with the Statement of Inquiry

The summative must let students prove, disprove, or add nuance to the exact SOI. If the SOI claims mathematical models can misrepresent societal fairness, the assessment must require analyzing real demographic data and creating both an accurate and a skewed model.

3. The GRASPS framework

Goal (the real-world challenge), Role (the student's professional persona), Audience (who receives the final product), Situation (the specific Global Context scenario), Product/Performance (what students create), Standards (which MYP criteria evaluate it).

4. Designing task-specific clarifications

Generic IB descriptors must be translated into the specific assignment context without lowering the standard — e.g., turning "communicates effectively, using a wide range of terminology" into "writes a persuasive museum placard, accurately using at least 5 specific historical terms." These must be shared at the beginning of the assessment process.

1. Assessing criteria that weren't taught

2. The "single strand" assessment

PHE. Role: Biomechanics Coach. Students analyze a peer's tennis serve using digital software, create a personalized 4-week training plan, and demonstrate the corrected movement themselves.

Mathematics. Role: Logistics Consultant. Students measure the school cafeteria, model queue bottlenecks geometrically, and present a mathematically justified redesign to the principal, discussing the margin of error.

Language Acquisition. Role: Travel Blogger, scaffolded with "Sentence-Framed Argumentation" templates providing mandatory transitional phrases to reduce executive-functioning fatigue while maintaining linguistic accuracy.
