In this final chapter of the series, we explore the philosophy behind contextualized learning, the six MYP Global Contexts and their specific explorations, how to select the right context, and how changing the context alters the direction of a unit.
Why This Matters
Educational purpose: the "why" of learning
All learning is contextual. Adolescents learn best when their educational experiences are explicitly connected to their own lives, interests, and the world around them; when a student can connect academic content to their own experience, they discover meaning, which provides the fundamental motivation to learn. Learning that occurs out of context — memorizing dates or a formula without understanding its application — is often shallow and short-term.
The common misconception: "it's just a theme"
A frequent struggle is treating the Global Context as a superficial "theme" — selecting Identities and Relationships because students are working in groups, or Scientific and Technical Innovation simply because students are using iPads. The Global Context is not a description of what you are doing in class; it is the lens through which students should be thinking about the academic content.
What happens if this is ignored?
If Global Contexts are ignored or mechanically forced, the curriculum suffers from "false coverage." The MYP provides specific "explorations" within each category to narrow the focus. How to avoid: explore "less likely" contexts — a genetics unit becomes far more rigorous viewed through Orientation in Space and Time (the historical role of agriculture and genetic modification over centuries).
2. The "kitchen sink" approach
The mistake: selecting three different Global Contexts for a single four-week unit hoping for a "richer" experience.
Why it happens: topics naturally overlap and the teacher wants to cover all bases.
How to avoid: choose only one Global Context per unit — selecting one establishes a clear, primary lens for the summative assessment.
